Need glowed in Jude’s eyes, gold swirling with her wolf close to the surface. I trailed my thumb down her neck, stopping at her pulse point. The fluttering beat sent a fresh wave of that delicious lavender and rain scent into the air. She was scared, unsure, and her wolf trembled beneath her skin.

She still hadn’t given me the whole truth.

I was pissed and protective. Pissed that she’d kept secrets from me. Pissed that she’d probably set herself up for disaster without realizing it. And protective because I could already imagine the ways my alpha would punish the Dusk Valley wolf found inside our territory.

Even though we were mates. Even though all I wanted right then was to show Jude the benefits of belonging to a good pack. Belonging to me.

I cupped the nape of her neck, angling her head so I could brush my lips against her ear. The tiny shudder that ran through her with just my breath on her skin filled my veins with warmth. “You’re mine, Jude. Your burdens are my burdens.”

Her breasts pressed into me as she sucked in a shallow breath, and she placed her palms on my chest. A reflexive push to gain some space, maybe, but she didn’t force any distance between us. Her fingers curled into the fabric of my shirt. “We don’t even know each other.”

Hesitation curled through the rain and lavender scent that haunted my dreams and every waking thought. Fuck that. She would learn she could trust me, day by day. Night by night.

My mate stood at the very center of my universe. I knew it with the same certainty as the moon pulling the tides. Jude’s place was beside me, and I would protect her. Love her. Kill for her.

She was mine to cherish until the end of our days. She was mine to protect from whatever bullshit her pack cooked up by sending her grieving and unprepared into enemy territory.

She was mine to claim the moment she gave me the words.

“You know what we are,” I murmured. She gasped as I rolled her earlobe between my teeth. I tightened my hold on the back of her neck. “You know you can trust me.”

Her chin dipped, the smallest of nods, but it wasn’t enough for me. Her chest rose and fell, breasts brushing against my ribs with her quickened breaths. I pressed my lips to the curve of her shoulder, rewarded with the feel of goosebumps rising across her skin. “Tell me, Jude.”

Her tongue darted out to wet her lower lip as a low whine escaped her lips. “I shouldn’t. It would be safer if I go now, for both of us.”

Not fucking happening.

I spun her around, pinning her hands to the counter. I boxed her in, settling my hips against the soft curve of her ass. My cock stirred, wanting to slide between her legs. Wanting to claim every inch of her.

Another whined exhale brought a grin to my lips.
